OnePlus Nord: Is this the "true north" the company wants us to look at? Review, specifications and price in India.
It's not even 24 hours since the launch of the OnePlus Nord but the tech world is all buzzing about the new mid-range smartphone from the China based company. OnePlus were known to make affordable phones couple of years ago and they had their own line of flagship killers till they happened to make their own flagship line-up in 2020. This made people who wanted a bit more affordable phones to look at other companies such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme or Oppo. But the company is back the same year with their new smartphone whose initial impressions show that it is gonna be the mid-range smartphone champion.
OnePlus Nord display: Playing safe with refresh rate.
It was the launch of the OnePlus 7 pro which saw the introduction of the 90 Hz speed display from the company and the company has never looked back since then. It's co-founder Carl Pei had tweeted that all of the company's future phones will come with a minimum of 90 Hz refresh rate. And it's no different with the Nord. It features a 6.44 inch 90 Hz amoled panel with a resolution of 1080×2400 . This is quite sharp and the maximum brightness is at 408 ppi which is okay at this price point. It also features an in-display fingerprint scanner which works very well and same as the previous OnePlus phones from the last year. The bezels are quite thin too along with the dual ounch hole cut out for 2 selfie cameras.
Performance: SD765G is pretty fast.
The Nord comes with the latest 700 series chipset from Qualcomm which is the Snapdragon 765G which also comes combined with 5G inside it. Not only is this chip really fast in day to day usage, it also comes with the future proofing because of the 5G inside it. It is also capable of running high graphics but just falls behind the 855+ of the last year. The chipset combined with the 90 Hz display should provide smooth gaming experience for almost anyone.
Cameras: Better than OnePlus 8!
The smartphone features a total of 6 cameras including a dual punch hole selfie cameras which has 32 MP main sensor combined with 8MP ultra-wide with a 105-degree width. The rear camera features a 48MP primary sensor, 8MP ultrawide along with 5MP paired with 2MP macro lens and depth sensor. The pictures taken from the rear camera are quite crisp and with a good color balance as it features the same camera and lens as the OnePlus 8 which is the Sony IMX586. One interesting thing to note here is that the rear camera can record videos with maximum upto 4k 30fps but the front facing camera is capable of shooting 4k 60fps. This is quite surprising because even their $999 flagship phone - the OnePlus 8 pro doesn't support 4k 60 fps in any of its cameras which makes the Nord even a better deal for the social vlogs.
Software: Typical OnePlus Oxygen OS
The one feature because of which the OnePlus phones are way superior than other brands is because of it's clean and feature-rich OS. It is the best Android skin anyone can buy if they are looking for something else than the vanilla Android experience of Google itself.
Design and colors: Familiar to many?
The Nord comes with 2 color options- Blue Marble and Gray Onyx. For those who are professional and office-oriented can go for the classy grey option whereas the blue looks to suit more younger part of people. The overall design is typical OnePlus with glass back and high quality plastic rails with curved back which gives a comfortable and confident hold compared to it's competition. It also has an alert slider at the right side and a single (but loud) bottom firing speaker. It does not have an headphone jack and it is not much of a big deal for people in 2020 since everyone is moving towards the wireless bluetooth era.
Battery: OnePlus has it on point.
The battery inside the OnePlus Nord is 4115 mAh which has to power a 6.44 inch 90 Hz panel. It is going to be just fine for many people and we expect it to perform a bit like the OnePlus 7 pro. It also comes bundled with typical Dash Charge of 30W which can charge the phone from 0-70% in half an hour. The cable which they offered is of the red color but it would have been nice if they would have made a blue one matching all the advertisements of the Nord.
Summary and final verdict.
The company is very high on this smartphone release and many consumers are going to be happy with what it has to offer to the price which is less than the iPhone SE released by Apple this year. It is going to be the go to phone to the people who don't really need a flagship performance, especially the younger group of people. This is going to be a killer mid-range smartphone which provides all the balance a smartphone should have and value for each buck.
