Samsung Note 20 Ultra feels like it has got all the premium stuff. But does the S-pen save it as always against the other flagships?
Samsung's Unpacked event just commenced less than a day ago and we got to see some exciting products from the event with their new flagship phone, the Samsung Note 20 Ultra caught most of the attention. With Samsung being high on their marketing and sales along with their partnership with the popular K-pop band BTS promoting their products, they look better than ever to regain the market share they once had. Along with the new phone, they also introduced new color variants which look quite stunning and ultra premium. They surely are getting ahead in the competition only next to the tech giant Apple.
Samsung does it again with it's classical "Note" design with the Note 20 Ultra
The design of the Note 20 Ultra is a familiar one which we are used to with the Note series phones from the company from past few years. With a classy boxy design and a huge 6.9" display with a high resolution of 1440×3088 and nearly 496 ppi. They call it as their Dynamic Amoled Display which has 16 million colors which is kind of cool and adds up to an immersive experience for any pair of eyes. The design is a classic one like the last year but it comes with new color variants which outperform many flagships with their premium feel. The design on the back is a matte glass with the large camera cutout housing three cameras and a laser sensor for auto-focus. The display curves around the edges a little bit like the older flagships and the bezels around the border yet again become thinner which makes the screen to body ratio to 91.7%. The new Mystic Bronze color was biggest the highlight of the event.
Performance: Samsung goes all out under the hood!
The Samsung Note phone, as always, is going to be available in two options considering the place you live in. It has the Snapdragon 865+ for the USA variant and it's inbuilt Exynos 990 (7nm+) for the global variant. Even though the performance of the Snapdragon is noticeably better than the Exynos, it is still a concern that why Samsung does that except to earn more profit. The software and the operating system is their own One UI 2.1 based on Android 10 which is going to be snappy when combined with the 120 Hz refresh rate and also the S-pen. Memory and storage : A quite interesting choice.
The Note 20 Ultra comes with 12 GB ram compared to 16 GB of the previously launched S20 Ultra. This may not be a big difference as the Note comes with a faster UFS 3.1 storage which can manage better day to day tasks. The storage can go up to 512 Gb which is quite massive for a phone. It also has a slot for expanding the memory for those rare people who aren't satisfied with the massive storage.
Let's talk about the cameras and the feature rich S-pen
This years Note has a triple camera setup which includes the main camera of 108 MP with a f/1.8, A 12 MP periscope telephoto with f/3.0 and a 12 MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 apertures. Both the main and telephoto get the OIS and the telephoto supports 5x optical and 50x hybrid zoom options. which means Samsung has gone against their 100x zoom stuff they had going on with their S20 Ultra which is a good thing.
The tiny hole punch cut out on the front houses a 12 MP f/2.2 camera which has a Dual pixel PDAF. All the cameras of the phone support auto HDR and can shoot up to 8K but with a different options in the aspect ratio department. The biggest highlight of this year's cameras if that laser autofocus which works quite brilliantly compared to all of the previous models in the market.
S-Pen
The S-pen this year is quite remarkable compared to the previous generations as the biggest upgrade is it's latency which has improved from 42 ms to a crazy 9 ms which is super smooth while using the phone to draw or write and gives an satisfying and immersive experience to use it. It comes this year with an intelligent memory of words for any kind of mistakes which someone can make while writing. This is the height of productivity which is unmatched by any other brands and that includes Apple.
The Battery of Note 20 Ultra won't disappoint?
The Note 20 Ultra houses a 4500 mAh battery which comes with 25W fast charging. it is quite surprising as the S20 Ultra gets 45W. It also has fast wireless charging option available along with a 9W reverse wireless charging which is a really useful feature for charging earbuds small accessories.
And.......the noteworthy 'Note' features and the price
The Note 20 has it's own features as the under display fingerprint display which is still ultrasonic. It has a new feature which is quite remarkable. It has something called DeX (desktop experience support) through which you can do mirror casting to an external Samsung display wirelessly. It also has support for bixby with dictation combined with ANT+. The sound experience is also cool as it comes with stereo speakers but with no headphone jack(as expected). They also include an AKG high quality earphones with a type-C connector in the box.
The Note 20 starts at Rs 1,21,990 in India and $1299 in US. This still looks a bit more of a price since the OnePlus 8 Pro is at $999 but you don't get a feature rich S-pen and the premium feel. It is quite reasonably priced compared to the S20 Ultra which was a $100 more expensive. Overall, this quite tells us how and why the Samsung comes at this time of the year and produces one of the best Android phones of the year.
